The mattebox helps to cut down unwanted lens flare and helps in adding changeable filters onto the front of the camera.

ND filters can cut out a number of stops of light starting at 1 and going right up to 10 stops. Combining two filters can also help you to block out more light if the image was still too bright.

This also allows us to play with more depth of field within the image which can help in giving a more cinematic look onto each shot. Other than that, the ND filters tend to soften the light on a subjects face which can help when shooting outdoors/indoors where the light source is too bright.
